Last week, I wrote a blog about the Maker Faire for Low-PowerDesign.com. One of the interesting things I saw at the Faire was a full-sized replica of the B9 Robot from the old, old, old TV show “Lost in Space.” That brought a smile to my face. It was a very bad show but it was almost the only science fiction on TV at the time. (Yes, I know, it’s hard to imagine a time when SF shows weren’t commonplace as they are today but in the 1960s SF was viewed as a mongrel genre. It wasn’t until Star Wars that the money-making power of SF was recognized.)
The B9 Robot that I saw at the Maker Faire was a homebrew but if you want a full-sized B9 to guard your wine collection, you can now get one containing a fair amount of embedded electronics from B9Creations for only $24500, shipping included in the continental US. For this price, you get a licensed copy with functioning lights and 500 voice tracks recorded by the original “voice of the Robot” Richard Tufeld.
However, the vendor can only make 12 a year and the maximum number he plans to build is 150. So better hurry. Here’s a video to convince you:
