Killer App: IBM’s Watson crushes the competition on Jeopardy! (I for one welcome our new computer overlords)

I just finished watching the third Jepoardy! episode where the IBM Watson supercomputer playing the Jeopardy! game app (the national broadcast television edition, definitely not the home edition) crushed its two puny human opponents with a score 3x higher than second-place finisher Ken Jennings and slightly more than that against third-place Brad Rutter. Previously, Jennings had a 74-game winning streak on Jeopardy! and Rutter has won more money on Jeopardy! than anyone in history. No matter. Watson trashed both of them in the end.

The Final Jeopardy! answer was “William Wilkinson’s ‘An account of the principalities of Wallachia and Modavia’ inspired this author’s most famous novel.” All three contestants answered with the proper question: “Who was Bram Stoker.” I hadn’t a clue.

In writing his Final Jeopardy! answer, Jennings added “I for one welcome our new computer overlords,” a sly reference to a meme started by an episode of “The Simpsons” from almost a decade past. An appropriate way to sign off from a trivia show, don’t you think?
