Research house In-stat has just released findings from a new 1Q11 US Digital entertainment Database with some surprising information about HDTVs and built-in apps. First, the report claims that 22% of US households with broadband service (83 million subscribers as of June 2010 according to Wikipedia) already own HDTVs with integrated TV apps. Of those households with app-enabled HDTVs, 68% actually use a TV app at least once per week according to the report. Further, Netflix and YouTube currently dominate the TV apps space. Unsurprisingly, the forecast is for more apps and greater penetration and the prediction is that TV apps will eventually become part of the mainstream TV viewing experience.
